Page publication: metadata about publication are updated at page field level, but not at container level

When I publish a page for first time, ladt publication date and last publisher are well initialized, at both field and container level. But if I publish it again, nothing is changed at container level, whereas it is well done at page field level.
I have tried using both workflow button in admin bar (field level?) and workflow state icon near container.
